Kingston University

Over the past eight years, Dextra Lighting has built a strong working relationship with Kingston University, becoming a preferred lighting manufacturer for a range of projects across the campus. Working alongside Blueserve, Neilcott Construction and Stantec (Reading) as M&E consultant, Dextra supported the university’s Penrhyn Road main building refurbishment and CCTV control room projects.

This latest project was part of a larger phased refurbishment at the University that kickstarted in late 2023, starting with the ground floor but closely followed by the first floor in early 2025. Both phases have benefitted from the same carefully specified lighting strategy.

In the CCTV control room, where staff work around the clock with no access to natural daylight, Dextra designed and supplied a fully automated human-centric lighting system. This included MOD UGR fittings with white tunable drivers, following a circadian rhythm control system that automatically adjusts colour temperature throughout the day. The system comprised a 910 digidim router, a scene plate for manual override and 321 multi-sensors for absence detection, helping to improve comfort and wellbeing for shift-working staff.

For the main building refurbishment, Dextra provided a full DALI-controlled system with all emergency luminaires being LS3. The luminaires were also supplied in different colour temperatures to suit various areas. In spaces with exposed services and no ceiling, the Comtec Surface luminaire was installed, while standalone LED4 fittings were used to meet the university’s emergency lighting strategy.
