London Gatwick South Terminal
Dextra Group’s decade long relationship with London Gatwick continues with a recent project within the South Terminal. Dextra Lighting has long been a preferred supplier, specifying and delivering commercial lighting across the site, while LEDextra has more recently been preferred on projects that introduce more creative lighting, such as RGBW feature lighting to enhance the passenger environment.
Following the success of the “Hollywood Stairs” installation in the North Terminal departure lounge, London Gatwick commissioned a similar scheme for the South Terminal departure lounge as part of a wider refurbishment. Working with BP Installations, LEDextra was tasked with creating a striking focal point in one of the airport’s busiest spaces.
At the centre of the project was the Glide Pixel RGBW, specified for the staircase and escalator walls. This direct-view, diffused linear luminaire incorporates 100mm individually addressable sections, enabling a wide range of dynamic effects. To manage the system, LEDextra supplied a Pharos Designer control system, commissioned by Darren Parlby of Oakcroft Technical. The system allowed a variety of programmed sequences, including London Gatwick’s signature blues, red/white/blue stripes, Pride rainbow effects, seasonal scenes and celebratory displays.
To complement the staircase feature, LEDextra introduced high-level accent lighting using AluLED RGB. Installed within new coving designed into the refurbishment, the fittings provided a soft glow of colour washing across the ceiling. Supplied with a four-channel dimmer as part of the Reacta Control range, the solution allows the colours to be easily adjusted via an app, giving London Gatwick full flexibility for different events and campaigns.
“As Senior Electrical Design Engineer for BP Installations Ltd, I had the pleasure of working with LEDextra on the recent refurbishment of the departure lounges in both Gatwick’s North and South Terminals. The feature lighting supplied and designed by LEDextra has played a key role in transforming the spaces, creating a modern, welcoming environment for passengers. Throughout both projects, LEDextra’s team were proactive, knowledgeable, and highly responsive, ensuring the lighting solutions not only met the design intent but were also practical to install and maintain. Their attention to detail and commitment to quality made a real difference to the overall success of the schemes.”
